In this piece, I created blinds out paper and string and overlayed them over a portrait of myself. I used blinds as metaphor for home. A house itself is a mask and the concept of the "perfect" home and the "perfect" family masks reality. A home can encompass both fear and safety. The masks and barriers we create can ultimately hurt us.

I created three interactive braille pieces: one was itchy, one was sticky, and one was painful to the touch. Making braille uncomfortable to be touched perverts the function of the object because braille is meant to be understood through touch. In each piece, something was behind the braille creating these sensations (itching powder, fishing line...) all unbeknowst to the viewer until interaction.
When interacting with the piece, sounds are created: (the whoosh of the fishing line, scatching of the skin created by the itching powder, or the wet sound of stickiness). These sounds were recorded and played with the series in an ongoing loop.

For this painting, I created a process that allowed me to stretch a painting of myself over a photograph of myself (both the painting and the photograph depicting the same image). As I was working with the process, the texture of the transparency began to remind me of skin and I began to imagine that I was stretching my skin over myself. In this piece, I first began to find personal meaning in skin and began to manipulate my own image. In this piece, my skin and my own image of myself became an object I both receded and emerged from.

Depart was the inspiration for my summer research in 2012 and its process and meaning are explained there.
